WCHS Wildcat Elite Skills Clinic!

Join other basketball players around the Front Royal Community at the 2008 Wildcat Elite Skills Clinic. The Skills Clinic will run on Saturday, October 25th, Sunday, October 26th, and Saturday, November 2nd ad Sunday, November 3rd, 2008!

The Wildcat Skills Clinic is designed to provide excellent instruction for the older basketball player (ages 12-18 are invited) to improve their offensive and defensive versatility. A push towards developing a basketball court "IQ" will be discussed throughout the clinic. This will be an intense workout clinic designed to show the skilled player what it takes to be an impact player on the basketball court at the next level. Participants will work on offensive skills such as shooting form, shot selection, penetration moves to the basket, dribbling, passing, offense with the ball, offense away from the ball, and team offense. Instruction will also focus on defensive techniques (individual and team defensive strategies), learning a transition game (on offense and defense), and how to develop court sense. Participants will be divided into groups by age and ability and will get plenty of one-on-one direction on offensive and defensive fundamentals. Through use of drills, one-on-one and small group instruction, basketball games where an instructor will stop the action and teach court "IQ" and situational strageties, all players will have a great opportunity to become a weapon on the next level of their play.

WCHS Skills Clinic is $50.00 for four days! Download a Clinic brochure by clicking here.

Wildcats attend VCU Team Camp

Several Wildcat Girls Basketball players kicked off the new era this summer when they attended VCU Team Camp on August 2-4, 2008. Playing against the top teams in the Northern Virginia area, the young group of players came together, learned new offenses and defenses, and spent many hours bonding in the wonderful facilities of the VCU Siegel Center. Junior Alicia Cavero was voted among opposing coaches to play in the Sunday All-Star game with other players from opposing teams. With much learned and much to improve, the Wildcats come back to Front Royal ready for the fall workout season.

Coaching Staff:

John Kelly ... Head Varsity Coach ... 1st Year at WCHS (11th overall as Head Varsity Coach)

Coach Kelly is entering his first year at the helm of the Wildcat Girls Varsity Basketball team.

Previously, Coach Kelly spent ten years as head coach of Chantilly High School, where he had 10 winning seasons, district championships, 2 regional finals and 2 trips to the VA State Tournament. At Chantilly, Coach Kelly won 7 Pohanka Holiday Classic Holiday Tournament titles, and was runner-up in the 2007 Kip's Erosion Control Tip Off Tournament. His teams have been ranked several times in the Washington Post, as high as 7th (2003). During the 2007-08 season John Kelly hit a personal goal, earning his 150th career varsity win. In 2002, Kelly received Washington area "Coach of the Year" from the Journal/Washington Examiner newspapers. He left Chantilly as the All-Time leader in victories (girls basketball.)

Coach Kelly is greatly looking forward to starting his tenure at Warren County HS and building upon the previous' coaches building blocks of success.

Coach Kelly, his wife Keri, and his three kids (David, Michael and Jamie) and Kasey the dog live in Front Royal, Virginia.

Chris Lazun  ...Varsity Assistant Head Coach ... 1st Year at WCHS (5th overall as Varsity Coach)

Coach Chris Lazun is entering his first year as coach of the Wildcat Girls Varsity Basketball team.

Coach Lazun has coached varsity basketball for four years, previously at Chantilly HS where he paired with Coach Kelly in maintaining a strong team and proud tradition with the Chargers. Working with the post players, Coach Lazun has helped develop strong play among the posts, with several players moving on to play at the collegiate level. Coach Lazun was also part of several championships and award winning teams while coaching with the Chargers.

Like Coach Kelly, Coach Lazun looks forward to bringing a winning tradition to WCHS, along with a dedication to hard work, strong play and a tradition of excellence.

In his "other" life outside the gym, Chris Lazun is an Assistant Principal at Clearview Elementary School in Fairfax, Virginia. He and his daughter, Emily, live in Northern Virginia.

Samantha Anderson  ...Head Junior Varsity Coach and Varsity Assistant Head Coach ... 1st Year at WCHS

The WCHS Athletic Department welcomes Samantha Anderson as head JV Basketball Coach this season. A former Wildcat, Coach Anderson is excited about the opportunity as a coach in the program.
